During the COVID-19 pandemic, MAPA surprised the Haarlem audience with thirteen site-specific performances at the former V&D building, titled MAPA MORPHOSIS (2020). For this special occasion, Michael Helmerhorst created the performance "Le Grand Magasin" with MAPA performers, focusing on the theme of retail excess.
As part of the growing collaboration between MAPA and the Pletterij, we now present an intimate version, "Le Magasin," performed by our three MAPA studio members: Aida Álvarez Fernández, Carla Dekker and Charlotte Riedijk. This performance combines various MAPA specialisations, including object and animation theater.
Additionally, a solo work by Aida Alvarez Fernandez will be showcased, developed during the MAPA Summer Academy "Procession of Icons." Her performance takes place within a scenographic design by her own hand.
Artistic Direction:
Direction and Coaching: Michael Helmerhorst and Ide van Heiningen
Lighting and Visual Design: Ide van Heiningen, Machteld Aardse, Jeroen Kriek, Kees van Zelst
Explore and deepen your physical performance skills by learning about masks and how they influence movement, gesture, and storytelling. The neutral mask brings the focus to our pure physical expression, making it a great tool to work on stage presence and physical acting skills.
Aleksandar Acev has a long trajectory as performer, maker and teacher and is an expert in physical theatre, body language and mask work. His approach opens up a dynamic environment for the exploration of physical expression and artistic discovery.
Discover beautiful and surprising ways of connecting with other bodies by lifting, supporting and being supported. This class is open to movers of any level or background.
Marjolein Wagter is an expert in the field of circus and partner acrobatics and a seasoned performer, maker and teacher. She will explain the fundamentals of giving and receiving support and guides participants through a safe and playful exploration of the endless possibilities of partner work.
Mask performance is a journey from outside to inside, where you let go of familiar patterns to discover new movements and expressions. These workshops emphasise physical awareness, energy, and storytelling without judgment.
Both workshops are connected but can be attended separately.

Improve and expand body awareness, stage presence and performative skills by means of physical work. Open to voice students and professional singers.
Musicality of Movement (MoM) is developed by Virág Dezső based on corporeal mime and physical acting methods, geared towards musicians in general. In MoM for Singers, soprano, voice pedagogue and mime Charlotte Riedijk combines her skills in both disciplines.
About the teacher
Charlotte is a MAPA studio member, currently conducting artistic research in which she applies the MoM approach to classical voice education.
This workshop will touch upon the following aspects:
* Breath: every movement is carried/guided by the breath
* Neutrality: alignment in posture
* Articulation: in breath, body, decision & action
* Space: connection with space, body, others and audience
* Balance & focus, in body and in space
* Transformation, shift/switch
* Listening – Musicality
* Improvisation
* Working on repertoire with a pianist
Both days start with a physical warm-up & exercises. The last part of the afternoon will be used to work on repertoire with a pianist.
The Musicality of Movement (MoM) approach focuses on enhancing physical performative qualities of musicians and singers. Neutrality, breathing and improvisation are some of the key elements. The final result shows open, playful musicians; performers who are able to surprise themselves and the spectator by a combination of preciseness and originality.
The teacher training prepares musicians to become certified MoM instructors.
Virág Dezsö (MAPA's artistic leader), developed the MoM approach and has been teaching and refining it for over 10 years.
Musicians! Improvisation towards real time composition will be in focus.
In this particular intensive, where different disciplines intertwine, the MoM approach helps you to find and create the balance between music playing and stage performing.
'Taking the body as a main means of expression and the performer as a starting point for creation with the aim of “making the invisible visible” (Etienne Decroux).
The intensives can be followed separately.
